Vaada is a Haryanvi romantic tragedy with a strong survival element — and almost 60% of the story takes place inside a well. That idea itself brought a big challenge in front of us, because we had to figure out how to create and shoot such a setup within a limited budget and resources.

The Challenge

At the start, the question was simple but important: how are we going to build a well? Should we actually dig a real one, or should we create it using wood or bricks? And even if we build it, how will we shoot inside it? We had never worked on something like this before, so everything felt new and slightly risky.

The Decision: Build It (Don't Dig)

After several discussions and brainstorming sessions with the team, we decided that digging a real well was not practical. Instead, we chose to build one.

We searched for an old, empty house with a central courtyard. The plan:

Designing the Illusion of Depth

Once the location was locked, we brought in our production designer, Sanjeev, and explained the full concept along with our budget limitations. From that point, the responsibility of making the well look real, old, and slightly scary was in his hands.

We built the structure using bricks — above the floor, not dug into the ground. With Sanjeev's vision, the well was designed to feel real and old on camera.

Sanjeev had only one person with him from the art department — Art Director Riya Ghosh. The rest of the team who actually built the well had no film background at all. They were labourers — people who had never worked on a film set before. But under Sanjeev's vision and direction, they pulled off something that looked completely real on screen. And what made it even more special — during prep, Sanjeev himself worked on the well alongside the labourers. That dedication, that hands-on commitment, is what gave the well its soul.

The Hidden Door — The Simplest Lifesaver

To make the shoot easier, we added a small hidden door inside the well structure. This allowed the actor to enter and exit safely, and also helped the camera team manage their shots without difficulty.

Shooting from Above

We ensured the roof of the house was strong enough to support camera setups, because many important shots were taken from the top. This gave us a complete view of the well and added more depth and intensity to the scenes.

Why the Well Became a Character

In the film, the hero gets trapped inside this well, and from that point, the journey of survival begins. All the struggle, fear, and emotion are centered around this one location.

The well wasn't just a set — it became part of the story. Every crack in the brick, every dark shadow, every water stain was working for the camera.

The Climbing Scene — No Stunt Double, No Harness, Pure Improvisation

One of the key scenes in the film is the climbing sequence — where the character desperately tries to escape from the well. We shot this without any stunt double, without any harness, and without any action equipment. Everything was improvised on set.

Here is how we did it: we had a movable staircase ready just outside the frame. The actor would climb up the stairs to reach the height of the well wall. We had made a small hole in the wall of the well — when the hero reached that height on the staircase, he would grip the wall through that hole. Then the staircase was quickly pulled away. Camera rolls. The hero performs the scene — struggling, climbing, fighting. After the cut, the staircase would come back in, and the actor would safely climb down using it.

The Exterior Well — Built for Scale

Along with the main set, we also built the exterior of the well at a different location. As you will see in the images, the height you see on screen is the actual height we constructed for the exterior. We wanted it to feel visually strong and realistic, so we did not compromise on scale. For this part, we took inspiration from Christopher Nolan's film The Dark Knight Rises, especially the way the well (pit) was designed and presented. That reference helped us understand how height, framing, and environment can make a structure feel more intense and cinematic.
